The days of the road trip have come and gone. This is unfortunate. Today, the majority of travelers would rather just hop on a plane and wind up at their destination in just a few hours instead of being cooped up two or three days in a hot car. What fun is that?

Personally, we would rather suffer the minor inconveniences of driving across the country with family members stuffed in the car just for the sake of a little adventure.

Summer is the time of year the majority of us will take a vacation. A much-needed vacation from our stressful and overworked lives. Many of you will fly to Florida or Arizona and visit parents. That’s nice, try not to have too much fun. And remember to tip your waitress at Applebee’s accordingly.  

We have news for you. Your parents waited 18 years for you to move out of their house, and they still don’t want you back. In addition, ask your spouse and your kids if they want to fly to Florida this summer or hop in the family vehicle and drive take the back roads to San Francisco, Portland or Boulder.

Your world is so strict, structured and technical. When was the last time you spent longer than a few waking hours away from a computer or phone screen?

A road trip allows you to disconnect from the world you are familiar with and explore what is out there in real time and in real life, not on a screen.    

It Will Expand Your Taste in Music

We get it, classic rock is the bomb and you can never get enough Tom Petty or Twisted Sister. But here is the deal; the rest of your family hates your music and forcing them to listen to it for two days straight in unfair. It might even be criminal.

To be fair, you must let other members of the family play the music they like. Who knows, you might actually learn to like postmodern metal or dig the latest Plan B song.  

It’s Absolute Freedom

Remember the last time you took a flight? You had to leave early to ensure you get through security without a hitch. There were long lines at booking, baggage and security and you had to wait a long time to board your plane.

The freedom of not having to be somewhere at a certain time and changing up your destination whenever you want is the high point of a road trip. There will be some unexpected moments, but they will turn into great stories.
