Your Austin Auto Repair Shop Offers Holiday Travel Tips

Before you and the family can enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving Day meal at your parent’s house and stuff yourself with turkey, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole, you must first endure a road jammed with cars, squabbling kids and sketchy weather.
Looks like the trip to grandmother’s house is going to be as expected; a miserable trip.
The television commercials you see where a family is traveling to their holiday destination are written up by fools who have never traveled with kids on wet roads. Families don’t smile and sing when driving to their Thanksgiving Day destination, they yell and cry and speak harsh words and curses to each other.
Now picture this; a trip to your parent’s house with well-behaved children full of smiles and compliments to each other and their mother and father. Life is perfect. No, this isn’t a commercial for Target or a dream, it is a reality that happens when you follow these holiday travel tips brought to you by Groovy Automotive, your auto repair shop in Austin.
Plan Ahead
It is estimated that more than 100 million Americans will be traveling over the holiday. There are several things you need to do before loading up the wife and kids and hitting the road. You will want to have your vehicle inspected before you go, breaking down on the highway is never a good start to the holidays.
You will also want to create a list of everything you need to bring along on the trip. You don't want to forget something important.
Plan Your Route in Advance
Conventional wisdom would have you think that you just hop in the car on the day of your trip, flip on your GPS and take off. Unfortunately, it isn't as easy as that. In all likelihood, there will be multiple routes available for you to choose. Do some research, decide which route will offer the least amount of traffic or which route will be the most scenic and create your map.
Plan for Snack Attacks
When traveling long distances in the car, you will hear a lot of moaning and groaning from kids in the backseat who seem to be hungry at all times. So it will be in your best interest to pack plenty of snacks for the trip.
After all, you don't want to starve your kids to death.
Have Essentials Handy
Packing a box of moist towelettes is an excellent idea, but utterly useless if they are at the bottom of a suitcase in the trunk of the car. The essentials that you will likely need to use while cruising down the road should be within reach and easy to get to in an emergency. These items could include a change of clothes for younger children, coins for the toll road and a grocery bag to store garbage.
New Games and Toys
For a kid, there is nothing more boring than a trip in the car. And this is coming from someone who can sit on the couch and play the same Playstation game for literally six hours. But this very same person can’t sit in a car for more than six minutes without having a fit about being bored.
For this reason, hit the store before your trip and stock up on some cheap toys and games. This advice comes from a parent who knows that kids will be bored with the games and toys they already have within mere hours if not minutes.
However, a new toy or a new game will actually keep them occupied a little longer.
Take Frequent Breaks
Regardless how many new toys you bring and how many treats you feed them, children will want to stop and take a break from sitting in the car quite often. Look, when you are young and full of all of that energy, you would want to burn it off as well.
Take frequent breaks so the kids can use the restroom, run around and do whatever is necessary to keep them calm for the remainder of the trip.
We hope this list helps take the edge off on your holiday road trip. Remember, before you leave on your trip,
schedule
an appointment with Groovy Automotive to ensure your vehicle is in good working order.
